I had previously read the first book in this series, A Loyal Heart and really enjoyed it. This was a simpler tale - but no less romantic or worthy of my time. Laurel and Thomas were well likable characters and while their story may not have had as many twists and turns as the previous book - I would still heartily recommend as a cosy read, perfect for reading on a wet windy day.

Can’t wait for more from this series.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have read numerous books about the Civil War, during and after but this is the first time about prisoners of war in Ohio and then a ranch(s) in Texas. Laurel is trying to keep you ranch going. Her stepsister & stepbrother have just been living with her but not doing anything to help. Someone wants her land & has paid someone to cause her problems -poison cows, shooting at her, a fire started.
This book is very well written and I liked how the author might begin a new chapter with the date which was when Thomas was in prison. This showed just what type of man he was & is - which helped me understand him more after he was indentured for a year to work for Laurel.
--- For those who think it should have only taken them (back then) to walk 3 miles in such a short time like walkers today, you need to realize that riding a horse, or in a wagon or buggy took much much longer back then because they did not have the paved roads we have today. Instead they had ditches, holes, hills, gullies, etc to walk in or around just to walk a little ole 3 miles. Even living as close as 5 miles to a neighbor made it hard to visit one another because it took much longer to travel than it would today. The same reason they did not go to their nearest town very often. ----
While I liked this book it was a little sweet. That would be my only criticism. The dialogue was stilted. Maybe they actually spoke that way in the south around the war, but it was pretty sugary.
The ending was abrupt, easy and boring. I expected more since these other officers had been called in to help find the culprit. It was all so uneventful.
I liked the growth and potential each character displayed. Faith, prayer and God were mentioned but not intregal to the story line. It was more an after thought. I wanted to see people changed by God. Thomas did seem to be, but Laurel's faith was very immature and weak.
I would recommend this as light reading.
This is probably more like a 3.5 star book, but I'll round it up to 4. I did enjoy the storyline and characters (Thomas is a wonderfully flawed and complex hero)—I even laughed out loud a few times. Unfortunately, the demise of the antagonist was a bit anticlimactic; it almost seemed as those the author lost a bit of her steam and just decided to put an end to the bad guys. So all in, not my favorite book, but I'd read another book by this author in the future.

There's something about Thomas Baker that intrigues Laurel, and it's no secret that she needs someone who can help maintain her property,he is worth taking a chance, Laurel is convinced of that.

Former Confederate Sargent Thomas Baker quickly learns that Miss Tracey not only needs his assistance with her daily chores, but it appears that she also needs his protection. There have been too many unexplained events to ignore the fact that someone wants to scare Laurel away from the Red Roan Ranch, even if it means resorting to violence. But how can he adequately shield her from cowardly malevolence, when he cannot even protect his own heart from caring so deeply about this beautiful, courageous woman who has given him a second chance and bravely insists on fighting for her post war heritage?

This sweet love story is filled with reminders of how scars not only wound a man's body, but can penetrate through to his very soul, as Thomas and Laurel learn together how valuable faith can be, even in the midst of trying circumstances.
