This was a weird read. The main female characters were in their junior and senior year of college, but they spoke as if they were 80 years old. Too proper for their age. I'm not saying a person in their early twenties doesn't speak this way, it just didn't seem realistic. When I was reading I had this arrogant old lady voice in my head for Sam and Everleigh as if they lived in the 1920's. It didn't fit with the picture the author was trying to create for these two. Same goes for Hunter. Maybe they were supposed to be this way, but I didn't like the way their "voice" fit into the story. I could've given this book more stars, but it's the voices that knocked it down for me.This book has a great story line with two mysteries to keep you reading. The "Who dunnit?", "Will they get together?", and "What's his deal?" questions will keep you reading til the end. I had my suspicions about those questions, but I couldn't really confirm anything until the author did.

I was excited for this one because I heard it had a Beautiful Disaster like feel. I can see that statement in the banter between Ev and Hunter but for me that was really the only BD feel I could identify with. The banter between the two was witty and fun and made me smile. However, the conclusions that Ev came to at times made me wonder about her intelligence. She comes across as this really bright articulate and witty girl but she has her total clueless moments. You will know it when you read it, because you will be scratching your head too. This was only minor though and didn't take away from the story.
The chemistry between Hunter and Ev was hot, the danger in the story was palatable and it all seemed to work together well.
The backdrop for the story is a college under attack from someone who is targeting women and beating and raping them. So there is an dark feel to the story with this mystery that was nicely balanced by the bit of humor between Ev and Hunter.
I enjoyed the story, I enjoyed Ev taking her safety into her hands by learning self defense. I couldn't for the life of me understand why Hunter was as guarded as he was even when it all came out in the open! I mean. . . really you can't open up a little and explain that to her? I still didn't see why he couldn't be honest with her. I think that was one of the frustrating factors for me. I would say more but I don't want to take away from the reading experience.
Over all this was a good story that I enjoyed and read within a couple days. This one will stand out from others because of attacks that take place on the college campus but I think that is the main thing that will keep me remembering it months down the road which is a shame because I would prefer it being the characters that do that.
I wanted to note I did kind of feel that the price of 4.99 was a bit steep for this book, would have preferred it at 3.99 or less.
I liked this book in spite of it's predictable storyline and the fact that the author is incredibly wordy. The basic concept of the book is, Everleigh is a college senior in a college town in New York. She and her best friend Sam live in an apartment off campus. Their relationship follows the normal lifelong friendship norm. There has been a rash of rapes on campus, putting every woman on high alert. The school brings in a martial arts expert and a police officer to offer free self defense classes and awareness classes to the women on campus. Everleigh and Sam take the class. When the martial arts expert, Hunter, walks in Everleigh is instantly smitten. They start off with a rocky start, but end up in a couple classes together and become friends. Ev convinces herself that Hunter is gay to explain his lack of apparent interest in her, but soon finds out that he isn't and their relationship develops from there.
It's a predictable storyline, which doesn't make it bad, but there were some issues with this book. The author uses a lot of big words (for lack of a better explanation) that don't flow well through the book. Most people, at least most people that I know, don't speak the way the characters in this book speak. Everleigh is wordy, even in her internal monologue. The author used very clinical writing throughout the book, using few contractions which also hindered the flow of the story. Along with the big words and the clinical writing, there were a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes throughout the story. It's kind of frustrating reading a book with grammar and spelling mistakes along with big words that most people don't use in everyday conversations.
Overall I gave the book 3 stars because if you can get past the big words and mistakes, the story under it all isn't bad. Even though I found myself skimming through the lengthy monologue, and it was incredibly predictable, I enjoyed reading the book. I took two stars away because I felt the use of the big words was a bit pretentious and out of place for these characters. Yes they are intelligent, however they don't need to use big words that the average person doesn't know in order to prove that. It's off putting when the author tries to use sesquipedalian (long words) to get their point across. See I can use big words too!
